some recent life drawings

Most (maybe all?) of these are from recent figure drawing sessions at work.

Dinosaur Museum!

So, I can't believe I've never gone to the Dinosaur Museum at Thanksgiving point. Turns out, it's the biggest Dino Museum in the world! Here's some sketches from my visit. I'm not done yet, though. I'll have to go back, and I don't care if it's just me and all the moms with little kids! There were too many dinos to draw all at once!

Prop designs

These are for my group's senior film. Dreamworks people told me I needed more prop designs in my portfolio...

Peter Deseve emulation

Here is a marginally succesful attempt to emulate Peter Deseve. I still like the polar bear.

Jim Lee style Sketch

This was the sketch for my previous post.

Character Design Process for LIGHTNING BOY!!!

LIGHTNING BOY was always teased in school... That is, he WAS, before he stole himself some SUPER HERO GEAR! Try teasing him now! Of course, the ill-tempered fellow is looking for his stuff. Our hero is barely realizing that this may not have been the greatest idea after all.
Thanks to Sam Nielson for the critiques!

UPDATE-  Here's the finished Lightning Boy painting.

another weird skull sketch

So, before you all think I'm weird and really like drawing skulls, you should know that this was a prop design for our senior film, and that we went with the bottom middle and right version. Ok, now you can go ahead and think I'm weird.

Odd Skull Design

(This painting is not finished yet.) Anyway, my purpose here was to do a 2-D graphic skull design with a very goofy look to it, and then figure out what the actual anatomy would look like. Of course, it leaves us with a very crooked jawed, assymetrical head that you really wouldn't want to see with flesh on it. But it was fun anyway, and I will finish it shortly.
Tools were: ArtRage 2.5 and Photoshop CS3.

Girl Sketch

I've switched gears again. I actually intend to paint this one as well, using a different approach. By the way, the story behind this is (not finished) as follows: It was prophesied that this girl's father would save his people from a terrible evil. Well, the terrible evil came, and he went to face it. He was killed. Now, she is holding his sword, trying to figure out what to do and what went wrong. She doesn't know that she will be the one saving the people... Indirectly, it will still be fulfilled.

My pen leaked. On purpose.

So, after talking to Jake Wyatt, I decided to post a full page of fully self indulgent doodles. Yes, they are mine. No, I don't expect them to get me anywhere in any art field. Yes it was drawn on lined paper at work. Hooray!

Gator Sketch

These are some sketches I did for my final in Ryan's class, but never used them. I was toying with the idea that the Demon Five Heads was a space alien crash landed in Africa. I liked them, so despite low image quality, I'm hanging them up here on my virtual fridge!

One More

After much discussion, Abby found a picture of a falling apart gas station with many of the qualities and shapes we talked about. This one is based a lot on that image.

Another Dillo Eviron

Here's another dillo environ. It's yet another version of that same dang gas station.

Armadillo Environments

I am working with Abby Ash to design the gas station, which is the central location for a our senior film. I had been drawing them with flat roofs and Abby had been giving them A frames. My new favorite is a combination of the two- half flat, half pointy. As for materials (and shape), we're going for a stucco look. I found the flippin coolest abandoned stucco gas station online... That's where I got the buttresses! We'll go over these in the morning. Also, I need to stop blogging after midnight.

BATTLE! (but it's only a model)

This is a sketch of a battle between the Samburu Warrior and the Demon Five Heads. I tried here to show them both in a more dynamic pose. Five heads attacks with tendrils and heads up front while holding back and protecting the sorcerer's corpse, the source of his power. Perhaps if my paper had been wider I'd stretch out the comp even more...

Now, with Color!

But only one, in several values. Cheerio!

The Kiss

The theme here is "Pretty Ugly". Drew this for Joe's class. I'll throw in some value shortly. I was going for a Norman Rockwell type composition... But then, clearly not.

Robot again

I made some improvements to this image, and now I like it better.
